Editorial Services & Fees

Fiction and Nonfiction Manuscripts

Initial Consultation

The needs of each book project and author are unique and, as a first step, we need to decide whether Dawn Marano & Associates might meet those needs. We welcome you to call or e-mail to discuss your project or idea.

Level One: Literary Consultation and Fee

A literary consultation may be appropriate for an author who has been working on a project for some time, or who has reluctantly set it aside, and who is seeking advice concerning its publication prospects. Questions that typically arise at this stage include the following: Is my book project viable? How do I find and contact potential publishers? Do I need an agent? Do I need to prepare a book proposal? For a fee of $150, DMA will review up to 30 pages of work, which may include sample writing, a proposal, and synopsis or outline of the project, offering advice and guidance on these and other issues. A consultation for up to one hour by phone or in person is included. A retainer of $150 is required to engage DMA for this service. For an additional fee of $100, DMA will review up to 50 additional pages of work.

Level Two: Editorial Review and Fee

An editorial review may be appropriate as the first stage of work on your book project. For a retainer of $750 we will read the entire manuscript (up to 300 pages) and provide a concise editorial review outlining its strengths and weaknesses and making general recommendations for revision. The written review serves as a "talking-points" document, guiding a three-hour consultation by phone or in person, which is included in the fee for this service. The consultation, a dynamic exchange of ideas and approaches to your revision, will be tape recorded for your convenience. For manuscripts longer than 300 pages, a pro-rated fee scale per additional page will apply.

Level Three: Comprehensive Developmental and Substantive Edit and Fees

A comprehensive developmental edit may be appropriate as the next stage for authors and their books. For a fee of $100 per hour we offer an in-depth reading of the book and comprehensive editorial notes, suggesting specific, substantive changes to guide your revision. Four hours of consultation by phone or in person is included. The consultation, a dynamic exchange of ideas and approaches to your revision, will be tape recorded for your convenience. A retainer of $1,500 is required to engage DMA for this service, and an estimate will be provided for the total cost of the project.

Please submit your manuscript pages double-spaced, using a 12-point font.

Poetry Manuscripts

Level One: Editorial Review Consultation and Fee

A poetry consultation may be appropriate for a poet who has been working on poetry for a while and seeks advice concerning taking the work to the next level. Questions that typically arise at this stage include the following: Are my poems ready to be sent out for publication? What are the strengths and weaknesses of my poems? How can I improve my poems? For a fee of $200, DMA will review 10 poems and give advice and guidance on issues such as tightening the language, line breaks, word choice, titles, beginnings and endings. A consultation for up to one hour by phone is included. A retainer of $200 is required to engage DMA for this service.

Level Two: Manuscript Consultation and Fee

A manuscript consultation may be appropriate for the poet who has a book-length manuscript and wants an independent evaluation of the manuscript as a whole. For a fee of $500, DMA will offer an in-depth edit of a poetry manuscript of 48-64 pages. This consultation includes not only identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, but also the individual poems that may or may not be ready for the manuscript. We will give specific feedback on language, the thematic structure of the manuscript and order of sections. We will also look at the poetic devices of form, tension, voice, and poetic risk. General feedback will be given to take the manuscript to the next level. Two hours of consultation by phone is included. The phone consultation, an in-depth exchange of ideas and approaches for your revision process, will be tape recorded for your convenience. A retainer of $500 is required to engage DMA for this service and place your manuscript on our schedule.
